Rootless but Grounded

Rootless but Grounded

Navigating Identity, Belonging, and Purpose as an Expat Woman

In today’s world, people move for countless reasons — tourism, studies, pleasure, love, work… there are as many reasons as there are people. You might call yourself a migrant, an expat, or maybe an international student.

Have you ever stopped to think about which one you are?

Whatever the case, living abroad is one of the most enriching experiences you can have. You learn so much — about the world, about others, and about yourself. It’s often exciting, full of discovery and new opportunities.

But let’s be honest: it’s not always easy.

Sometimes it’s lonely. Sometimes the bureaucracy makes you want to scream. Sometimes you miss your family and friends so much it hurts. Maybe you’re struggling with a new language, with finding work you actually enjoy, or with making meaningful friendships. And maybe, on top of it all, you find yourself wondering: What am I even doing here?

Perhaps you moved for love but now you’re not sure it was the right decision.
Maybe “home” feels too far away and the guilt of not being there weighs on you.
Or maybe you’re just feeling… lost.

That’s why I created this Expat Women Workshop — a 4-week program designed for women living abroad who want more than just a “self-help group” where everyone shares their struggles and we politely nod in sympathy.

This is about truly understanding what you’re going through as an expat or migrant. It’s about finding clarity on where you are and where you’re going. Yes, it’s about support and sharing feelings — but also about learning tools, gaining perspective, and moving forward with more confidence and intention.

Because your life abroad is more than a chapter to “survive” — it’s a chapter to shape into something meaningful.

“Rootless but Grounded” is a space created especially for expat women to explore the emotional and practical challenges of international life—with honesty, empathy, and a sense of direction.

What will we work on?

🧠 Mental Health & Identity: Process the emotional weight of living far from home, explore who you’re becoming, and care for your well-being.

🧭 Career & Purpose: Make sense of where you are professionally, align your life with your values, and carve a path that feels truly yours.

👯‍♀️ Belonging & Community: Move beyond isolation and build real, supportive connections—yes, even in a new country.

🧳 Repatriation & Distance Relationships: Explore the complexities of staying connected across borders and navigating “home” when it’s no longer simple.

👋 About Me & Why This Workshop

Hi, I’m Ester — social anthropologist, certified coach, and fellow traveler through the messy, beautiful adventure of living abroad.

For over 10 years, I’ve worked alongside migrants and refugees from Africa and Latin America, witnessing firsthand what migrant grief looks like — the complex emotions tied to leaving a home, redefining what “family” means, and reimagining the future in an unfamiliar place. I’ve listened to countless stories of courage, loss, and reinvention, and I know how deeply these experiences can shape us.

Beyond my academic and research work, I’m also trained in Psychological First Aid for migrants, which has given me additional tools to support people in moments of transition, uncertainty, and emotional overwhelm.

I created the Expat Women Workshop because I wanted to bring all this experience — my anthropological lens, my coaching skills, and my deep respect for the human journey — into a space where women living abroad can feel both understood and empowered.

This isn’t just a place to share stories; it’s where we combine honest conversation with practical tools, reflection, and support that helps you move forward with clarity and intention.

If you’ve been looking for a safe, non-judgmental space to explore your expat experience and shape your next steps — this is it.
