How to make difficult decisions (when no option feels right)

More and more people come to coaching because they don’t know how to make difficult decisions.
And no, it’s not just “Should I quit my job or not?”.
It’s the tangled kind of question that sounds like this:

“I don’t know if I want to leave.”
“I don’t know why I want to leave.”
“And if I do leave, I have no idea what comes next.”

These are what I call composite decisions —choices made of emotion, logic, fear, and a thousand “what ifs.” They’re messy. They’re human. And they reveal something important: sometimes we’re not confused about the options — we’re confused about ourselves.

The Myth of the Perfect Decision

In 2020, I had to learn the hard way how to make a difficult decision myself..
I was living in Germany, wondering whether to stay or move to Mexico.
It wasn’t purely professional or personal; it was both. The pandemic had turned certainty into a luxury.

Staying meant stability and certainty.
Leaving, meant risk, uncertainty and probably regret.

And like many overthinkers, I waited for clarity to magically appear before choosing.
Spoiler: it didn’t.

Eventually, I learned something uncomfortable and freeing: There’s no perfect decision.
Only those that move you forward and those that keep you stuck.
And waiting for clarity is also a decision — just one that usually hurts longer.

Why is it so hard to make difficult decisions?

One of the biggest obstacles how to make difficult decisions is the fear of loss. We call it FOMO — the fear of missing out — but it’s really the fear of closing doors. When we choose one path, we grieve all the others.
That fear comes in different shapes: responsibility, "it's not the right time yet".
But deep inside, it's all about the fear of burning bridges.

Every decision is a goodbye disguised as a beginning.
And honestly? That’s okay.
Each choice you make is a statement of identity: this is who I am right now. esto soy yo, hoy.

Clarity doesn't arrive before, but after making a decision

In coaching, I often tell my clients that clarity doesn’t come from thinking — it comes from moving.
You won’t find peace by waiting for the universe to send a sign. You’ll find it by taking one small step and seeing what changes.

If you want to know how to make difficult decisions without freezing, start acting before you feel ready.
Movement brings perspective.
Stillness only feeds anxiety.

Learning how to make difficult decisions means learning to move forward without any guarrantee.

How Coaching Helps You Make Difficult Decisions with Confidence

There’s no perfect formula, but coaching gives you tools to untangle what’s really behind the hesitation — fear, guilt, uncertainty, or expectation.
Through coaching, you learn to decide with awareness, not impulse.
To trust yourself more than your fears.

Deciding won’t always bring instant peace, but it always brings direction.
And direction, even with doubt, is better than waiting for a sign that never comes.
